North Arkansas Electric Cooperative, Salem, recently dedicated the first generation source it’s owned in the coop’s nearly 80-year history: a 1 MW solar array. “Our goal is to provide our members with reliable, affordable power,” said Mel Coleman, CEO and the state’s representative on the NRECA board. “New technologies have made solar generation a viable way to help us accomplish that.” The array will yield a side benefit as well, Coleman noted, through educational tours the coop has begun offering. “We already have hosted three chemistry classes at the solar array and look forward to many more,” he said. “We want to promote STEM-based education and careers to our students.”
